Can Student-Built GSAs Provide Positive Development for LGBT Youth in High Schools? A Review of Literature
Beau Coggsdale is working towards a degree in Biology and Environmental Studies. His interest in internalized homophobia developed from noticing the strong relationship between suicidal ideation in adolescents in relation to their sexuality. His involvement with EMS has led him to become increasingly interested in mental health issues and how schools can combat feelings, such as internalized homophobia, to reduce suicide rates. Although not directly related to his field of study, the impact of internalized homophobia is an important issue that he believes can be resolved through proper research and implementation to create more accommodating environments within schools for adolescents.
